Designing for a Cure
2011 WI Breast Cancer Showhouse

Posted: 6/10/11

Since the inception of the WI Breast Cancer Showhouse in 1998, it has proven to be a great community building and fundraising event. Its mission is to support breast and prostate cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Over thirty local interior designers have come together to transform this year’s Neo-Mediterranean Revival mansion into a gorgeous environment combining classic and elegant with transitional and dressed-down elements. Participating in a showhouse is quite an undertaking from both time and financial standpoint. Gratitude and a huge thank you go to our WI Chapter ASID members, vendors, generous sponsors, and attendees for making this event a great success year after year.

2nd Annual CEU Day Held in Milwaukee

by Megan Wiernik
Posted: 4/25/11

On Saturday, March 26, 2011 48 design professionals and students gathered at the Direct Supply Headquarters for the 2nd Annual CEU Day.  An event created for the most “free-time” challenged, those who attended were able to cross off their annual 0.3 continuing education unit requirement in the course of a single day, with the added benefit of learning in the company of close friends and colleagues.

Greeted with coffee and cookies to help energize both those just arriving and those who had attended the board meeting earlier, the morning began by offering the group with a choice of three workshops.  The first, The Myths and Truths About NCIDQ and STEP presented by Ken Baker, Program Manager at NCIDQ, and Jessica Mahne, ASID of MATC, held an open discussion to help prepare those planning to take the exam in both the near and distant future.  Deb Barrett, an award-winning designer and trend consultant, led the second workshop, FUTUREVISION: Interior Design in 2021, which discussed how advances in technology and differing values between the younger and older generations will fundamentally alter the role of designers in the next ten years.  The final workshop, LEED’s Evolutionary Roadmap, presented by Rick Levin of Kahler Slater, discussed the path Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design has taken and will continue to take in the future of the industry.

Having worked up an appetite from the morning sessions, MDC Wallcovering/Sandy Weber and Bentley Prince Street/Catherine Prossen treated the group to a delicious fajita bar and selection of chilled beverages.  The pleasant commotion of chitchat and laughter as everyone enjoyed their meals made evident that the morning had been a success, but the upcoming presentation by the keynote speaker, Jane Pollack would raise the bar even further.

A highly successful artist turned business strategies speaker, Jane Pollack shared the trials and successes of her career as an egg decorator in a session entitled 21 Ways to Grow Your Business.  As the title suggests, Jane broke down the often overwhelming concept of “business growth” in twenty-one tasks that help one to more efficiently use their time and be more confident in their own potential.  These tasks ranged from ideas as simple as keeping a testimonial file to highlight past successes and thanking others for what they do, to broader concepts of maintaining an image to appeal to the desired audience and learning to trust one’s instincts.

Jane also discussed the importance of learning to utilize the talents and support of others, whether by delegating tasks to those who are better suited to handle them or having a friend on speed dial to provide encouragement through difficult tasks.  Not wanting to do all the talking herself, she even included a BINGO type activity that got everyone up on their feet and talking to other participants as they collected signatures on cards, to illustrate that even the often daunting task of networking doesn’t have to be all that scary if an ultimate “mission” is created to guide the introductions.

The afternoon came to a close with an overall satisfaction that new ideas had been shared.  Events such as CEU Day reaffirm the importance of peers coming together to share wisdom and experience, but perhaps more importantly, when in good company, learning can be a very good time.

Career Day 2011

2011 WI Career Day Planning Committee Co-Chair
Posted: 3/11/11

Each year, members from the Wisconsin chapters of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) volunteer their time and efforts to plan the WI Interior Design Student Career Day. It is a day dedicated to expanding students’ knowledge and awareness of current trends and issues in the design field, as well as providing an opportunity for students to network with practicing design professionals. This year’s theme was “Make Your Mark,” expanding on last year’s theme, “Passion for Design: Putting the Pieces Together.”

Students had an early start to their day, making the commute to Madison, WI where American Family Insurance graciously provides their facilities. Schools represented include Gateway Technical College, Madison Area Technical College, Milwaukee Area Technical College, Mount Mary College, UW-Madison, UW-Stevens Point and Waukesha Community Technical College. At check-in, students were given hand-sewn portfolios which contained the day’s agenda, instructions for activities, and bios of attending professionals and speakers. Designed, cut, and sewn by the planning committee, the portfolios were made of discarded wallcovering, which was donated by local wallcovering representatives.

After a continental breakfast, everyone settled in to the auditorium for the morning remarks and keynote speaker. Wisconsin chapter presidents Bill Beaudreau, ASID and Tracy Pugh, IIDA opened up the day with personal reflections and insights on their paths in interior design. They touched on how students can begin to make their mark on the profession and within their careers. Their dialogue included rotating photographs of their projects and involvement, and how they’ve made their marks on the industry and beyond.

Laura Gainor of GMR Marketing, Milwaukee, started the day running with an excellent presentation, “Make Your Mark with Social Media.” Her multimedia presentation focused on how to develop one’s personal brand and launch an interior design business with social media through the examples of her own endeavors. Find her full presentation at LauraGainor.com. At the end of her presentation, Laura challenged the students to create a compelling virtual resume in four days using the new social media tools learned in her presentation. Click here to see the top five submissions from Wisconsin interior design students.

The day was then broken up into three break-out sessions. The Interviewing & Confidence panel addressed how to get that initial interview, the interview process, dos and don’ts, proper attire and etiquette, and follow-up. The Healthcare panel consisted of healthcare designers speaking to their roles and the process of designing a wide variety of healthcare facilities. The third session, New Avenues in Design, featured designers who have taken on new or additional roles in the design industry in response to the changing economy. They offered their personal insights and advice on how to become multidisciplinary and stay on top in uncertain times, as well as outlining many alternate paths that are available in design.

Following lunch was the Career Fair and Vendor Fair, which gave students the opportunity to meet local product representatives, as well to network with practicing design professionals from a variety of backgrounds. When students engaged with professionals, they received paint chips which become their raffle tickets for the drawing at the end of the day.

Debbie Bautista of Antron Carpet Fiber, Los Angeles, gave the closing keynote. Her presentation, “Reinterpretations: A Sign of the Times” focused on eight current and upcoming trends that are shaping the world of design as well as fashion. Influences encompassed iconic trends from past decades, military, romanticism, technology native cultures, and more.

The day ended with the raffle drawing which included many fantastic items. Thank you to our local reps from EJ Welch, Haworth, Hirschfields Wallcovering, Herman Miller, Jaekle Distributors, Kimball Office, Knoll, LG Surfaces, ProSource Flooring, Mannington Carpets, MDC Wallcovering, Shaw Flooring, Target Commercial Interiors, and Wolf Gordon for donating raffle prizes! Also, thank you to Allsteel for donating the grand prize, a Relate chair with choice of seat fabric. In addition, throughout the day’s activities, each member of the planning committee secretly kept their eyes peeled for a student that made their mark on them. From asking wonderful questions, to demonstrating motivation and passion, to even being punctual, eleven students were awarded with the Golden Paint Stick prize and a gift card.

Students walked away from the event with new knowledge tools, new contacts, and we hope a greater sense of how they can make their mark in the design profession and beyond.

ASID WI Design Excellence Awards 2010

by Megan Wiernik Posted: 2/8/11 Though the past year has been more than a little rough on the industry, those gathered for the 2010 Design Excellence Awards on February 4, 2011 found more than enough cause for celebration.  Focusing on the strong ties among the members of the design community and outstanding achievements in design, over 280 gathered at Bradley Pavilion of Marcus Center for Performing Arts to partake in the Wisconsin Chapter’s biggest party of the year. The evening started off in style with a cocktail hour, where friends and colleagues alike, could catch up on the year’s events while enjoying a drink courtesy of Childcrest Tile & Stone, Duet Resource Group and Koroseal Mid-West.  Dinner then followed, where guests were treated to a delicious meal provided by Sazama’s Fine Catering.  However, before the rolls were passed and salads enjoyed, chapter President Bill Beaudreau invited everyone to find another guest they didn’t know and share with them one event of the past year that was cause for celebration – a lovely way to acknowledge the little achievements of the year, just as awards presentation to follow would recognize the greater ones.  The official ceremony followed dessert, and was lead by event co-chairs Jim Olson of Briohn Design Group and Carole Syse of Herman Miller, who showed all present that this event was some business, but more importantly all about the fun.  Introducing each awards presenter with their own theme song and inviting everyone that crossed the stage to do their own little “victory dance”, twenty-one professional designers and four students were given awards for their exceptional work completed this past year. Finally with the awards announced, the only thing left for the evening was to really get the party going.  With celebratory drinks in hand and music provided by Exciting Events, guests danced the rest of the night away – a perfect close to an already exceptional night.  It’s celebrations just as this that show that even in tough times and no matter how many hiccups there are along the way – no one will ever forget having to change the venue just a few weeks before the party – there is always something to celebrate and a without the dedication of Aga Artka, Anne Hunt, Jim Olson, Teresa Olson, Tommy Sweeny and Carol Syse this event wouldn’t have been such a success.

January Chapter Event: Westye Bakke Center

By Tina Raasch-Prost, ASID Posted: 1/27/11On Tuesday January 18, ASID WI Chapter held our first event of the year at the Westye Bakke Center in Fitchburg, WI.  It is the hosting and training facility located between the Sub-Zero and Wolf plants designed by Madison based Zingg Design.  It was a wonderful event of information, good food and drink and networking organized by Catherine Hempfling-Prossen, ASID, LEED AP of Bentley Prince Street and Megan Petraszak, ASID of Dybdahl’s Classic Kitchens. The approximately 45 members who attended were treated to a space not open to the public and only utilized by members of the trade on occasion for events such as ours.  Gerry Perrine, Sales Manager for the Westye Group, welcomed attendees and showed a short film on the planning and design of the Westye Bakke Center.  We were then encouraged to stroll the space which included two kitchens; one done in an Italian Villa Style and the other East meets West which featured a beautiful water feature and artistic glass.  The Pub, an art deco style Irish pub, was also a highlight.  Wine tasting, provided by Tom Loup with Vino Veritas, featured 4 whites:

  • 2009 O’Reilly’s Pinot Gris Columbia Valley,
  • 2009 Four Vines Chardonnay “Naked” (not aged in oak) Santa Barbara,
  • 2009 Pico Maccario Barbera D’Asti “Lavignone”,
  • 2009 Sineann White Table wine (Gewurztraminer) Yamhill-Carlton

And 2 reds:

  • 2008 Definitive Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast,
  • 2009 Domaine de Givaudan Sonoma Coast

The wines selected were wonderful and paired nicely with the selections the chefs prepared utilizing the Wolf and Sub Zero appliances.  Items to graze on included Short Rib sliders (click here for the recipe!), Duck Confit pizza, and freshly made fritters dusted in cinnamon sugar among other wonderful options. A wide cross section of members attended the event from students, those interested in membership with the chapter, to long term members making new acquaintances.  It was another wonderful chapter event leading many members to look forward to the next event February 4, for the Design Excellence Awards at the Bradley Pavilion.
